Feedback from the Community Forum of 22nd September.

by Jan Lampen
A community forum was held on Sunday, 22nd September where the Trustees presented plans and a budget for additional parking and renovations of the Church properties now that the Windmill property has been sold.

Chandré reminded us that “humanity is to nature as light is to darkness” and it is with this consciousness that we assessed how best to use the gift money from the sale of the Windmill property moving forward.

Additional parking is a necessity, but we also looked at important areas such as security, fencing, water attenuation and water harvesting. As we approach the 100th birthday of The Christian Community, this is an opportunity to ask what the Church of Lazarus presents to the next generations in Johannesburg and how our physical structures reflect our movement for religious renewal.

Tony Bolton has been assigned as project manager in partnership with At Ferreira of Asiwele Construction who also built our Wake Room. All efforts will be made to deliver an environment which is safe and reflects the ethos of our community and residents.  A detailed plan of the proposed renovations is in the Community room and available on request.

The vision for the proposed renovations was well received and community members at the forum responded positively to the enlarged parking design and the unification of spaces in front of the East Manse and the Church. Work on the tree and stump removal has already commenced and the new parking should be complete before the Advent Fair on the 2nd November (Budget items 1 to 4).

The plan is that members and friends of the Church of Lazarus will join the new Gardening Task team. Our task is to plant indigenous trees and re-imagine our gardens before the hedge in front of the church is removed.

    New Parking

This page documents the project to create a flow through from the church property to the East Manse to extend the parking. As part of the project the perimeter is replaced, stormwater managment on the East Manse property implemented and the church driveway made perdestian-friendly.

The project commenced in the last week of September 2019.
